We started in 2013 with family friends as an activity to participate in together. Our first grading seemed like an impossible task… but after the whole club practiced night after night with us, we soon got our yellow belts and the bug for Taekwondo!

Taekwondo gives our family time together; but more than that it binds us together with challenges to master both mentally and physically.  We love the discipline of taekwondo: it develops our will and strengths more than our body, it grows confidence, co-ordination and a spirit of never giving up.

Above all we love that taekwondo is equipping our girls with the ability to defend themselves if the occasion arises, as parents we can be confident that our girls stand a chance should anything happen to them.

At times our girls want to give up, but we’ve made the motto that we fight together! It’s often in the hardest times that we’ve observed the biggest growth, so giving up is just not an option. 

Tony is a great mentor, giving so freely of his knowledge and patience, his ability to slow things down when clarity is needed and push us when required, helps us learn and grow at our own pace.  We highly recommend taekwondo for EVERYONE!

Last weekend Tony and Paul Wood attended a coaching seminar in South Melbourne. The seminar was focused on helping coaches develop their students poomsae skills and techniques. Coaching courses like these are important so we can give our students the best advise and training possible when competing at inter-club and state level championships.

My son Aidan started with Gibb's Taekwondo in Benalla when he was 7. At the time he was bullied at school and we wanted Aidan to learn to defend and protect himself.

We have watched him achieve each belt grading over the last 5 years and with it gain in self-confidence thanks to Tony’s expert instruction.

He is keen to achieve his black belt and participate in more competitions so I started taking him to an extra class in Wangaratta. As a result of my sitting there watching I began to think about joining myself.

There were a couple of other mums training who were very supportive and I thought if they could do it so could I! So I'm very proud of passing my first grading recently and look forward to Aidan's and my achievements in the future.

Monday the 16th is the final grading of the year for Benalla. After the grading we're having a casual BBQ to finish up a great year of taekwondo.

The BBQ will be starting from 6:30pm. Snags and soft drinks provided, all welcome.

Gibb's Taekwondo will then be closed over the festive season and will reopen Monday 3rd February 2014 in Benalla. Wangaratta classes will resume Tuesday 4th February.

Fight for Life is an event that celebrates a wide variety of martial arts whilst raising money for cancer research.

International and local instructors across a huge range of disciplines will be in Melbourne performing demonstrations and running over 140 hands on seminars.

I’ve always had a fascination with martial arts and taekwondo, so I was looking for something that would break the normal routines of life, and give a completely separate focus point, while improving my own mental and physical development.

I discovered Gibb's taekwondo, in the local yellow pages and never looked back. I’ve been involved with Gibb's taekwondo in Wangaratta, since late 2008. I have found taekwondo to be a great way to make friends, stay healthy, and build mental and physical skills. I always look forward to the self defence sessions, and I enjoying learning new skills in defence. In the session you get to meet great people, everyone wanting to learn and work and hone in on their skills!

Going through the levels or belts is a positive challenge and builds determination to keep progressing, through the ranks so to speak!

Reason for starting: My friend told me he started doing Taekwondo and I thought that it would be useful and fun to learn how to defend myself.

How long: About 11 years.

Current level: 1st Dan Black Belt.

What do you like about taekwondo: The thing I love most about taekwondo is that you learn something new almost every week, regardless of what belt you are. Whether it be a self-defence method or polishing kicks, you always have something to hone in on and do it to the best of your ability.

One of the aspects of Taekwondo that should appeal to everyone though, is the real world use of this (or any other) martial art. Unlike a lot of sports, a martial art provides a valuable skill that can aid you in life, while also keeping you fit. These two factors combined make something that you will never regret doing, or even just giving it a try.

Once you really start appreciating what you are learning and have already learnt, you will see that Taekwondo isn't like other sports such as football and soccer, but that it becomes a part of your life that you can't imagine going without. It gives you confidence to strive to do better at other things in your life. And of course, it's good fun!
